I imagined that it was a very stylised portrait but found an old black and white image of the young socialite at a ball in 1945 and it’s a pretty good likeness

Both paintings portray Claire Stafford and therein lies a story

There is an ancient label on the back that simply say ‘Major Ramsay’

At one level of appreciation this is a  beautifully painted figurative work by a leading nineteenth century Swedish artist

Priestley and Thesiger and the result was exhibited that year at his solo show with the Goupil Gallery
